Hurricane Preparedness
The mission of the Ascension Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is to serve the citizens of the Parish through effective planning for natural and man-made disasters. Our goal is to save lives and to protect property through the coordination of an integrated emergency management system with all emergency response organizations, support services and volunteers. We will be an advocate for greater community efforts, including educating the general public to mitigate and prepare for potential emergencies. We will support efforts to train and exercise emergency responders in both the public and private sectors. We will manage and coordinate efforts toward a rapid recovery from disasters with an effective disaster assistance program. This office will be the point of distribution of Homeland Security information and intelligence to agencies throughout the parish. We are committed to effective actions designed to prevent some disasters and to reduce the impact of those over which we have no control.
The First 72 Are on You
The "First 72" highlights the importance of having a well-stocked 72-hour emergency kit containing essential supplies. These supplies should be readily available and sufficient to support your family needs.
Having your family be self-sufficient after a hurricane is crucial. Essential services like power, communication, and emergency response may be disrupted for a period of time after a hurricane. Having the necessary supplies and resources on hand can significantly improve the well-being and safety of individuals and families in the aftermath of a hurricane.
Disaster supplies kit for your family is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency. Prepare your emergency supply kit in an airtight storage bag or container and place supplies needed by your family. A basic emergency supply kit should include water, food, medicine, a battery powered flashlight with extra batteries and a cell phone with backup battery chargers. Consider adding additional items based on your family’s needs.
